MAKER'S HUB

Our community art hub will be a space that puts the visual arts at the centre of Leamington Spa’s cultural offering. We will invite and encourage all sectors of society to be part of the visual arts community, offer support and guidance to practitioners, and create an inspiring, must-visit cultural destination for the general public.

We plan to create a new, sustainable arts space in Leamington Spa that fosters inclusivity, creativity, and community engagement. The creation of this thriving arts hub aims to provide opportunities for artists of all disciplines while ensuring accessibility for underrepresented groups.

A Space for Creativity and Inclusion

At the heart of our vision is a commitment to making the arts accessible to everyone. The new space will feature affordable studio spaces, exhibition areas, and specialist facilities, such as a ceramics studio, to meet the needs of artists and creatives in the region. Additionally, the hub will provide flexible workspaces for those who require a dedicated environment to explore their practice.

Recognising the social benefits of the arts, the space will also serve as a community centre where individuals can participate in workshops, mentoring programmes, and outreach initiatives. We are particularly focused on supporting individuals who face barriers to engaging in the arts due to financial, social, or health-related challenges. By collaborating with local charities and mental health organisations, the space will foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all.

Sustainability and Financial Resilience

To ensure the long-term viability of the arts hub, we are developing a sustainable funding model that integrates diverse revenue streams. This includes:

  • Affordable studio rentals for artists and makers
  • Membership schemes offering discounted access to facilities and events
  • Workshop and course fees, providing opportunities for skill-sharing and professional development
  • Retail and exhibition sales, featuring local artists and craft makers
  • Event space hire, generating income while encouraging broader community engagement

A Hub for the Local Community

Leamington Spa has a vibrant arts scene, but our research highlights a gap in provision for fine artists and makers requiring ‘messy’ creative spaces. The new arts hub will address this need while also revitalising the Old Town area. Similar initiatives, such as the LSA Art Room, have demonstrated the economic benefits of arts spaces, driving footfall to local businesses and increasing community engagement.

Public consultations have revealed a strong demand for community-oriented arts spaces. Many artists struggle with a lack of studio space, affordability concerns, and limited exhibition opportunities. Parents have expressed a need for child-friendly facilities, while individuals from vulnerable backgrounds have highlighted the importance of inclusive and accessible programming. The new arts hub will cater to these needs, creating a dynamic and welcoming space for everyone.

Aligning with Broader Cultural Strategies

Our proposal aligns with the Arts Council England’s 2020-2030 strategy, which emphasises inclusivity, resilience, and community engagement. By prioritising accessibility, fostering collaborations with educational institutions, and supporting mental health initiatives through the arts, the space will contribute to Leamington Spa’s cultural and economic growth.
